I mentioned the other day an elephant in the room among many small business owners: loneliness. It’s strange, because you can have friends and be lonely. You can have a boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse and be lonely. You can have an extremely successful business and be lonely. Suffice it to say that friends, relationships, and money do not equate fulfillment. We’ve been conditioned to believe that money and materialistic things can make us happy such as followers on Instagram or a nice house with a big pool, but really those things are dispensable at best. For any small business owner, having a successful brand is clearly important, but we are all only human. We all need human interaction and time away from responsibilities and obligations. We need more listeners and less followers. More love and less likes. More “let’s meet for coffee” and less DM conversations. I truly love my instagram. I love the creative liberty it allows me and my business. I am blessed with so many excellent connections per this very app. But I think when we feel lonely, we turn to this app and reach, helplessly, for affirmation. Again, I love my page. I love being creative and meeting people, but let’s MEET. Let’s jam. Let’s do a shoot. Let’s go have brunch. Let’s write. Let’s travel. Let’s hang on to our humanity, for just a little while longer.
